Smith Young is an independent retail and catering property consultancy. We specialise in the leasing and lease consultancy of some of the UK’s most prestigious shopping centres and high streets.

We currently advise on a property portfolio with a combined value of over £14 billion.

We offer clients a refreshing alternative – the gravitas of a large, traditional agency combined with the flexibility and dynamism of a smaller boutique.

Since we first set up in 1990, we’ve been proud to work on some of the biggest names in UK retail, including Meadowhall in Sheffield (British Land), Bluewater in Kent (Landsec), Bullring in Birmingham (Hammerson) and both Westfield London and Stratford (Westfield).

James joined Smith Young in 1991 and is an Equity Partner with over 25 years’ experience at the cutting edge of shopping centre leasing.

James lives near York and is married with three daughters. As well as spending time watching hockey and netball matches his interests include skiing, golf, rugby and time out on the bike.

Joel Bancroft

Joel joined Smith Young in 2008 from CBRE. With over 19 years’ experience, he provides strategic advice to shopping centre landlords. This includes rent reviews, lease renewals, restructures and expert witness work.

In his spare time Joel’s interests include football, rugby, golf and mountain biking.

Nick Phillips

Nick Phillips

Qualifications – BSc (Hons) Dip MRICS ACIArb

Nick has come full circle having graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a Property diploma, only to return to Sheffield, with wife and kids in tow, to join us in 2014.

In the interim years, he held positions at DTZ and Savills, meaning he’s worked in the retail sector for over 15 years.

His hobbies include squash, golf and walking in the Peak District.

Nicola joined us from the Arcadia Group in 2003 and has over 20 years’ experience in retail lease consultancy, from both a landlord and tenant perspective.

She lives in Sheffield with her husband and three children. When she’s not chauffeuring them around, she enjoys gardening, cooking (with wine), baking and running (without wine).

Richard Padley

Richard Padley

Richard joined us in 2016 from GVA - Leeds, where he was head of the Retail and Leisure team. He's an Equity Partner with over 12 years' experience at the cutting edge of the Retail, Catering and Leisure sectors.

Richard lives in Leeds with his wife and two young boys. Away from work Richard is a big sports fan and likes to keep himself active down at his local Crossfit gym. He also enjoys watching Sheffield Wednesday (unbelievable, but true…).

Simon joined us in 2002. He’s an Equity Partner with over 18 years’ experience of working in shopping centre leasing.

Simon lives in Sheffield with his wife and two sons. When he’s not ferrying them from one sports event to another, he (tries) to enjoy Sheffield United and is a keen motorsports fan. Simon’s an active walker, climber, cyclist and motorcyclist.
